What I Learned Wednesday #61

Hello again!  Welcome to another week of the
What I Learned Wednesday Link Party!

Thanks for coming by and linking up!
I hope you all had a great Father's Day weekend.  My husband said that he did.  I made him a delicious blueberry lemon breakfast cake, but we also had to speak at our church so that we were a little nervous.  But nothing too crazy, we both actually enjoy speaking.  :-)  I know, we're weird.  And we got to spend time with both our dads so that's always nice.

Today I took the girls to the library for story time.  They have a hard time sitting still and want to pull all the books off the shelves, but they love books!  So it's worth it.  Here are some pictures.

Kami read Clo and I a book.  She did a great job at showing us the pictures!

And Clo is on the go!  She has become quite the climber lately and learning to stand on her own!  She'll be walking in no time.  She crawled up here all by herself!

And now to the features for this week!

Toasty Pies - More Fun Than S'mores!

Almost every year that we lived in California growing up, we went camping at the beach.  It was a great family vacation that we always looked forward to.  And sitting around the campfire we would of course eat s'mores, but there was always something else on the menu too...

Toasty Pies!

And what are toasty pies?  Well I'm glad you asked!  I guarantee this will be your new favorite campfire tradition and your friends will all think you're a genius!  They're so simple, but so delicious!

Here's what you need:

Biscuit Dough (Just the kind from a can)
Pie filling or pudding
Cool Whip
Tree Stakes
(The poles to support newly planted trees.  You can find them for $4 at Home Depot, but you'll need to cut off the stake end so they aren't sharp)

All you have to do is take one piece of biscuit dough and stretch it over the end of your tree pole.  Try not to spread it too thin!  Slowly turn it over a campfire or coals to cook it.  You'll know it's done when  it's nice and brown on all sides.  Cook it slowly so it gets cooked all the way through.  Like s'mores, this may take a little practice to perfect.  Once it has cooled slightly, carefully pull the cooked biscuit off the pole.

Take your pie filling or pudding (my favorite is lemon pie filling mmmm!) and fill your biscuit cup.  Then drop a little cool whip on top and eat!

They're delicious!
And like anything cooked over the campfire, they can be a little messy.  But as always, well worth it!

Enjoy!

What I Learned Wednesday #60

Hello everyone!
Welcome to the What I Learned Wednesday link party!

I hope you all have been having a great week!  I've been trying to find some fun things to do around our new home and today we found a splash pad!  The girls loved it!  Even through shivering the whole time.  The weather was nice, but the water was really cold!

10 Creative Ways to Wrap a Gift

For those of you with students in your life, you know it’s graduation season. And let’s not forget that Father's’ Day is just around the corner!  For those of you scrambling to shop for presents, we have some original gift-wrapping ideas to share:

10. Origami-it Up

Origami is a great and simple option for gift-wrapping. If you’re giving a smaller gift, like jewelry, you can easily make your own box for it. To add a unique interest, you can use anything from fancy embossed origami paper to repurposed magazine pages!

9. Repurpose The Sunday Funnies

Speaking of which…there’s always the infamous Sunday comics-as-wrapping-paper gag.  It adds a quirky, fun-loving touch to your gift wrapping.

8. Repurpose Anything!

If using the comics section of the newspaper is too juvenile for you, you could get more classy and use something like artsy pictures from Vogue or old sheet music. You can even make decorations out of these materials, too.

7.  Wrap your gift with a scarf

The Japanese traditionally used furoshikis (large, handkerchief-like pieces of cloth) to wrap boxed lunches and the like. Today, using furoshikis (or your everyday) scarves are a great way to wrap presents. There are many different specialized ways to fold your cloth, for everything from a bottle of wine, to a couple of books.

6. Brown Bag It

If you’re out of wrapping paper and gift bags, your everyday lunch sack will do just fine when you’re in a pinch. Be creative—write a poem, draw some doodles, pull out the metallic gel pens and go crazy! The brown bag serves as your canvas.

5. (Bigger) Brown Bag It

If your gift is too large to fit in a lunch sack, you can opt use paper grocery bags. Not as tacky as it sounds: you turn the paper inside out, so the logos aren’t visible, then decorate as you please. Using larger brown paper bags is also a great money-saving option for those who are more “old-school” and like to wrap textbooks.

4.  Take It Out

You can place your bag in a take-style gift box for a unique spin on every-day packaging. You can buy take-out boxes pre-decorated or find a plan box and decorate it to your heart’s content!

3. Decorate Your Gift With Candy

You can top your wrapped presents with anything you like, from the standard ribbons and bows, to the less-standard pieces of candy. Some creative ideas to decorate your gift with candy include sticking on candy buttons or making a unique bow with licorice strings.

2.  Have Fun With Ribbon

There are a lot more things to do with ribbon than just your standard bow. For example, you can use ribbon to make ties, particularly a great option for wrapping a Father’s Day gift.

1. Use A Reusable Gift Bag

Rather than throw out gift bags that you receive, use them again! You can even use reusable tote bags as a gift bags-- that way, it’s like giving two presents! It’s also probably one of the greenest ways to add some chic to your gifts.
Rather than spend money on a generic bag or tissue paper to wrap your gifts, consider these creative ideas-- the receiver will definitely appreciate the time you put into wrapping the present as much as the gift itself.

Unleash the Power of the Female Brain Review

I was given the chance to read the book
Unleash the Power of the Female Brain
by Daniel Amen

This book helps women understand their brain better and find ways to help it be healthier and stronger.   Dr. Amen discusses hormones, strengths and weaknesses of women's brains, and foods to eat to help boost the health of your brain.  One of my favorite things that he does in this book is that he gives you examples of real people he has worked with and helped.  It's easier to connect with what he's saying when he gives an example of a woman who could have been in a situation just like you.

Throughout the book Dr. Amen gives you exercises to assess where you're at with your brain health and to help you really know where you need improvement.  If you really want to work at improving your brain power, Dr. Amen suggests getting lab work done to check different hormone levels and such, and I think you should.  Because there are so many things that can be going on with your brain, it would be good to know which of those things you can really focus and work on rather than looking at everything and not really knowing where to start.  This way you'll have a starting point and will be able to do exactly what will help you!

Unleash the Power of the Female Brain helps you gain control of your brain and find ways to help it.  Whether that's stopping negative thoughts, conquering cravings, working with depression or anxiety, allowing you to form lasting love, or preparing you for children.

Dr. Amen starts off the book by talking about brain envy and really wanting your brain to get to it's optimum health.  Which you need in order to want to change your brain health!  And this book can get you that.

I also love how positive he is about women.  You can tell he really cares about women and helping our brains be great!

If you want to help your brain health, this is the book for you!

And to help you get started on boosting your brain health, I am giving away a

What Will Kami Be?

Over the last few months, Kami's imagination has really begun to develop.  I love watching her play and to see the different things she comes up with.  And usually that includes becoming "someone."  It reminds me of a book we have called There's Always a Way, Annie McRae! by Brad Wilcox.  (Brad Wilcox was actually one of my professors at BYU!)

Anyway, the book is about a little girl who wants to be pretty much every profession when she wants to grow up until one day her friend says she can't do all of those things.  I love at the end, her dad says she can be whatever she wants to, but she doesn't have to do it all today.
It's really cute.  You should check it out at the library next time you're there.

This reminded me of Kami because I see her developing all these amazing qualities and skills and am curious to see what she will be when she grows up.

Will she be an artist?
She loves to paint!

Or a personal trainer?
She loves to exercise with me.  If I even try to use dumbbells they immediately become hers.

Or maybe a nurse?
She often points out owies and will use anything as a band aid.  She has also checked mine and Alan's eyes, ears, and mouths a few times.

Maybe she'll be a singer.
Have you seen Monster's Inc?  She has become just like Boo!  She sings made up songs and usually you can only understand one or two words.

A Dancer?
She loves to spin around whenever she hears a good song.

Or perhaps a gymnast?
She is a somersaulting champ!

Will she be a fashion designer?
She loves to put on my clothes, lots of her own clothes, and even Clo's clothes.

Maybe a make-up artist?
This girl cannot get enough of make-up!  She loves to play with it and put it on herself.  Usually now she's ok with me pretending to put it on her. (This is when she drew eye liner on Clo.)

And I know she'll be a great mom.
She loves to play with baby dolls.  She pushes them in the stroller, changes their diapers, feeds them, burps them, puts them to sleep, gives them their pacifiers, and shush's them when they cry.  It's adorable to watch!

I know whatever my little Kami decides to be, she will be awesome at it!  It's so fun to watch her learn and grow!

Giraffe Hand Print

Last year for Mother's Day, I made my mom a elephant hand print of Kami's hand to put in the nursery that they made for the grandkids.  I thought it would be fun to have all the grandkids put their handprints as jungle animals since that's the theme of the room.  And since I'm the only one with kids so far, I got to start the theme.

So now that Clo is almost a year old, I thought it was about time to do a hand print for her.  So we made her a giraffe hand print!

I like to pick animals that represent my girls a little bit.  I chose an elephant for Kami because that was the first animal sound she could make.  And I chose a giraffe for Clo because she has a super long tongue and used to stick it out all the time.  :-)  I'm hoping our next baby is a boy and his will be a monkey because boys are monkeys right?  Am I thinking way too far ahead?  Oh yes!  But it's still fun to think about right?

Anyway, the hand print was easy to make. I just put yellow paint on Clo's hands, laid her hand down on the paper as best as I could, then painted the details in black paint.

For more step by step instructions and how to make the elephant hand print, go HERE.

I also took a few pictures of the nursery for you to see.  So my dad is really good at duplicating things that he sees.  My mom bought some decorations for the baby room with a jungle theme and my dad copied the animals and painted a few of them on the walls.  It's really cute!  Here's two of them and there's an elephant painted by the door.  I love the little monkeys hanging from the ceiling and so do my girls!

This is a really fun keepsake that I hope all the grandkids do so we can keep all their little hand prints in a fun way.
